Vikings win in Double Overtime thriller
Vikings win a thriller in double overtime on the road against conference opponents Lee County.
The Lee County Yellow Jackets took an early 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Vikings wouldn’t be shut out. The Vikings would get their first score with one second left to go in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets fumbled, and the Vikings recovered with just over 12 to go in the half. The Vikings made the most out of the recovery, taking the lead two minutes later, 14-13.
For most of the first quarter, it seemed like this game would go the way most of the Vikings season had gone, but they wouldn’t roll over. This team had a fight and had something to prove.
One minute after their touchdown, the Viking defence intercepted the ball and ran it in for a touchdown, making the score 21-13 after a field goal.
The Vikings defense did well several times in the game. Before halftime, they prevented a touchdown by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down..
Union Pines would score on a 36 yard pass with just under 9 to go in the third. The Yellow Jackets wouldn’t go away quietly. The game begins to shift momentum after Lee scores on a QB keeper with under five to go in the third.
Lee County scored again with under four to go in the game, making the score 25-27. An important two point conversion was good for the Yellow Jackets to tie the game. The Yellow Jackets would end up missing a 4th down field goal kick with seven seconds left in regulation. That’s when the excitement would really begin.
Union Pines scored first in overtime on a 25 yard play. The Yellow Jackets scored on their first play of overtime, but missed the game-winning field goal and the game went into double overtime with a tie of 33-33.
Vikings received the ball first and then again would have the crowd on the edge of their seats. Vikings would have a 9 yard pass, a false start penalty, QB fumble, and would still end up with the ball on the 1 yard line for third down. They got in on 4th down to take the lead again, making the score 40-33 after the made field goal.
The Vikings defense came into double overtime ready to end this game and that’s exactly what they did. First play was a two yard loss, second play sack, third play incomplete at the 20 yard line. One last play, and the Viking defence got their second sack of the drive to end the game.

The Vikings are now 2-3 overall and 1-0 in SAC play. They will have a BYE week next week before traveling to Scotland on the 29th.
