Grunts fall at home
Father Capodanno Grunts hosted St. Thomas More Academy Wednesday evening for a non-conference match up. The Lady Grunts tipped off first, coming into the game. The ladies held a 7-5 overall record. St. Thomas More came into the game 12-10 overall. The Lady Grunts looked to their leading scorer Julie Attar, who has scored 169 points this season and averaging 16.9 points per game before tip-off.
Attar and the Grunts got off to a slow start on offense. St. Thomas More came out with full court pressure from the start of the game. The fast pace tempo forced several turnovers for the Grunts. St. Thomas More scored 21 points in the first quarter, outscoring the Grunts 21-4. The second quarter went about the same way, with the score being 35-14 at the half.
With St. Thomas More still running full court press the Grunts went scoreless in the third quarter, while St. Thomas put up 8 more points. Attar was shut down by the St. Thomas defence, but was abe to get going in the fourth scoring a game total of 10 points, leading the team in scoring. Emma Klotz, who recorded several steals in the game had an outstanding defensive performance throughout the game. Even with the last quarter 13 points, it wasn’t enough. The Lady Grunts fell to St. Thomas More 52-25.
The Lady Grunts are now 7-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Their next game will be Monday 29, at home against North Moore.
The Guys came into the game 2-13 with Senior Luke Moon as their leading scorer averaging 14.7 points per game. St. Thomas More came out scoring from the start. The Grunts defense slowed the Chancellors from running away in the first quarter, but the offense couldn’t get moving being outscored 13-4. In the second quarter, the Grunts could hold the Chancellors to 8 points, but still had trouble finding the bucket again by scoring 4.
The Grunts came out of the half trailing 22-8, but they made adjustments. Starting with a faster tempo on offence several players put their name in the score book. The Grunts won the quarter and while the offense made adjustments to the defence, allowed another 11 points to be scored against them. Down 31-19 in the last quarter, the Grunts never rolled over. Adjustments made at half time had the Grunts going in a fast pace offense which started to affect the Chancellors. The Grunts outscored the Chancellors 13-8 and by the end of the game; the score wasn’t too far apart. Seven Grunts put their name in the score book by the end of regulation with Moon leading the team with 9 points. The fourth quarter push was a little too late. They fell 39-32.
The Grunts fall to 2-11 overall. Their next game will be Friday at Star Christian Academy.
