Lady Grunts Basketball underway
Father Capodanno Lady Grunts opened their season on Friday on the road at Fayetteville Christian. Before Friday’s game, Head Coach Rebecca Marsh talked to MooreDailySports about the preseason.
“The turnout for the beginning of the season exceeded my expectations. I had initially anticipated seven girls, but pleasantly, eight showed up. What’s even more exciting is that four of them are completely new to basketball, bringing enthusiasm to the team, and an excitement to learn,” said Marsh.
This is the first year that the Grunts are in a conference. They will also have a true home court this season at Moore Montessori School in Southern Pines.
Father Capodanno is a growing school and is continually growing their athletic department. Most students play of the sports that are offered at the school.
“It has been a very steep learning curve for many of these girls. I’ve been emphasizing to the team that “we can only go up from here.” With each practice, we’re building a stronger foundation,” said Marsh. “The players, especially those new to the game, are absorbing so much information every practice, and I’m impressed by their dedication and eagerness to learn.”
“This season is particularly special for me as I first had the chance to work with three of the players when they were in 8th grade during my initial year coaching at SJPII. Emma Klotz, Lexi Waldo, and Julie Attar, who are now Juniors. It feels like the gang is back together, and I couldn’t be happier about it,” said Marsh. “These players have already shown great promise, and I can’t wait to witness their continued progress and leadership on and off the court. Their experience and skills are going to make a big impact on the team this season, and I’m excited to see how they contribute to our success.”
Not only is four ladies new to the team, but Marsh is as well. This is her first season with the Grunts. “This is a new team, and it takes time to build the qualities that make us a team. We win together, we lose together. If we show up and play with determination and effort, that’s a win. I am looking forward to what’s to come,” said Marsh.
“My expectations are pretty much the same for any coach, which is improvement, camaraderie, and effort. While a winning record is what we hope for, as long as we improve every single day, I’m good with that. Part of Father Vincent Capodanno’s mission statement is to develop resilient leaders. That’s the goal,” said Marsh.
