Friday Night Lights Recap - Week 1

Friday Night Lights Recap: Week 1

Week one was shocking, to say the least. One team makes a statement, one runs up the board, one upset and a low score in 8-man.

8-Man

Sandhills Classical Christian hosted county rival Father Capodanno, their season opener. SCC defeated the Grunts 20-0 splitting wins in the all-time record at 1-1. The 20-0 shutout may sound bad, but coming off a 59-0 loss, it seems the Grunts defense may be finding their grove.

8-Man football is fast passed and high scoring typically. The Grunts offense remain scoreless on the season being outscored 79-0. The Grunts next game will be September 6th at John Paul Catholic kickoff is at 7 p.m.

SCC will host Lee Christian Friday night, time TBA.

North Moore vs Carver

The Mustangs have shutout Carver 27-0 the past two years and have won three straight against Carver. The 34-22 upset took fans by surprise.

The Mustangs heavily relied on Colby Pennington, who played both sides of the ball. He passed, ran, caught, and punted. The Mustangs did a used several players to run the ball, which is what they are known for, but struggled in the passing game. Carver returned one punt into the end zone.

The defense is where the Mustangs seemed to struggle. Carver would find the sidelines while running the ball and that’s where they would gain their most yardage. The Mustangs won’t be back home for a month and have just one more non-conference game at 0-1 Southwest Randolph next week.

Union Pines at Triton

After last week’s scrimmage, the talk was new coach, same team. This week, traveling to Triton, they made a statement, and that statement was heard throughout the county.

In the 42-0 shutout, the Vikings quarterbacks passed 9 times for 11 completions and 82 yards. Eight different Vikings carried the ball for 209 yards and 4 touchdowns. Caleb Milton carried 7 for 32 and received all 4 touchdowns. J. Carraway lead in rushing with 12 carries for 107 yards.

Carter Herring recorded one sack. Harley Moyer had two interceptions and Caleb Milton had one interception with a 38 yard return.

The Vikings will host 0-1 Northwood Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Pinecrest at Knightdale

The Patriots traveled to Knightdale and ran the score up in their 62-18 win. Knightdale remained scoreless during the first three quarters. The Patriots were lead by two QB’s, Cody Hansen went 9 for 12 with 111 yards in passing. Najee Gillis went 3 for 3 with 30 yards.

Six players rushed for 400 yards, five touchdowns with 35 combined carries. Jayden Kounkel had 11 carries for 109 yards, and Chris Najm had 11 carries for 177 yards.

The Patriots will host 1-0 Overhills Friday night kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
