Lady Mustangs win conference opener
The Lady Mustangs volleyball team started the season on a high note Tuesday night with a conference road win over Northwood 3-2.
Last season came to an end in the second round of the state playoffs, but the early exit did not represent the ladies outstanding season. They finished the year with a 16-9 overall record and 11-6 in conference play.
The Mustangs worked on fundamental drills, conditioning, and spent time in the weight room over the summer. With a good turnout for workouts, the Mustangs kept 24 girls in the program between JV and Varsity.
“Our expectations for this season are to stay consistent with our performance. We are taking one game at a time to work towards getting higher in our conference standings and to make it further into the playoffs,” said coach Leenheer.
With whole team improvement in the off season, it can often be difficult to pinpoint specific players early on who coaches believe will lead. “It is hard to narrow down to a couple of players with how hard these girls have been working as a team. But I would like to talk about my Senior setter Olivia Hussey who has really stepped up this summer to be more of a leader on the court,” said Leenheer. “Nevaeh Ross is another one that has shown a lot of leadership qualities and has been a prominent player on the front row.”
The Mustangs went down two sets before battling back Tuesday night to win three straight sets to take the game.
