Preseason Interview - North Moore Baseball

Mustang Baseball looks to add to last year's historical season-- Pre-season interview.

The North Moore Mustangs baseball season begins Tuesday night at home. The Mustangs are coming off of a historical season, making it to the State Championship where they fell two games to none against Uwharrie Charter. They with an impressive overall record of 22-10 and 9-4 in the conference.

“We’re still riding that wave,” said Kennedy. “Taking that into this year, we would be foolish to approach this season any different from we did last year.”

This year, the Mustangs have a slightly different look, but they haven’t forgotten what they accomplished last season and hope to build on it this season. According to Coach Billy Kennedy, one difference between the two teams is last season, the infield and pitching staff were senior heavy. This year the Mustangs will have to revamp their pitching staff and the outfield will carry more experience than the infield.

Four seniors, who were heavily relied on for their pitching, graduated “Every year I lose a good group of seniors. I tell them they will not be replaced. What they do here leaves a mark on the program. We challenged the seniors this year to look at what the guys before you have done, and to leave your mark,” said Kennedy. “We lost a good senior class, pretty much our whole pitching staff. We have a lot of work to do as far as our pitching rotation.”

Another difference between the two teams is the amount of players. This season, the Varsity team has ten on the roster, but with a round 15 on JV, Kennedy will be keeping an eye on the younger guys if needed. “We challenge the younger guys to look around,” said Kennedy. “Every day is a challenge and a competition for those guys and I think there are some that can come up and help if needed.”

There is one similarity between the teams, and it may be one that continues year after year, chemistry. “A similarity is the fact that they like each other, the locker room and the chemistry is the same. There aren’t any competing egos and with baseball that is rare,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy is confident that this year’s seniors are ready for the challenge and to lead this team. He will be looking for Austin Patterson SR, Elliot Furr SR, Will Kennedy SR, Nate Dyer SR, Dawson Futrell JR, Dalton Massery JR, and Aiden Corfois JR to step up and make big plays in their positions this season.
