North Moore Mustangs Softball -- Preseason Interview

The Mustangs finished with a 8-11 overall record and a conference record of 6-5. The Mustangs made the state playoffs but Falls Lake defeated them in the first round.

“I think our ladies finished the season like most athletes when the end comes a little somber that the sport they loved was done for the year. However, due to our squad being extremely young, a lot of girls were looking forward to a successful year to come,” said coach Covington.

The Mustangs have had a large turnout for off-season workouts and have been busy since the fall. “Our ladies have been swinging bats and fielding since this past fall. There has been some growth and high expectations set,” said Covington. “Turnouts this year were great! We will have enough for a Junior Varsity team, which is vital in our rebuilding process.”

With the induction of former State Champion coach Cheryl Brewer into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame, the Mustangs are reflecting on the legacy of the Softball program and are hopeful to make a run. “Moral will be high. These ladies are defending the Mustang legacy while laying the foundation of our future program,” said Covington. “I am expecting the Lady Mustangs to rekindle the rich softball history this school has had. Our ladies are working hard and ready to go.”

Coach Covington will look for the two seniors Hannah Hunt and Logan Maness to step up and lead the program this year. “Our seniors have been amazing these last four years; however, I foresee both of them turning it up a notch this year. I am already seeing major growth from both young ladies and I am looking forward to what they do on the diamond,” said Covington. “Not only are they seniors, but they are natural leaders. They have been around for a while and understand the process.”

The Mustangs will also play to the advantage that several ladies can play various positions.

The Mustangs would have opened their season Tuesday at Northwood, but that game has to be rescheduled.
