Moore County Kick-off Classic — North Moore

Moore County saw the North Moore Mustangs in action Friday night at the Moore County Kick-off Classic. It is 25 miles from North Moore to Pinecrest with Union Pines in the middle, so most fans do not get the chance to see teams other than their schools play. That’s what made Friday night special. Everyone got a look at all three teams. The Mustangs played Western Harnett in two 12 minute quarters with no special teams.

Coaches got the opportunity to take a look at their teams in actual game situations before the season officially starts this Friday. North Moore coming off a historical 13-1 season has a new leader taking the snaps and an O-line that has some unfamiliar faces, but were able to hold their own in Friday’s scrimmage. “We have some things we have to fix, but that’s a big 3A team. They did a good job overall tonight,” said Carrouth.

The game didn’t count, but a rolling score was kept in a Moore County vs everyone. The Mustangs put 24 points on the board for their segment of the classic. The county got to see the Mustangs offense do what they do best, and that runs the ball. “We’re still rusty. We got a few yards here and there, but not constantly,” said Carrouth. The Mustangs threw two of the touchdowns and ran one. Elliot Furr gave the Mustang Defense a touchdown as well.

Furr scooped up a fumble and ran it in for nearly a 60 yard TD. The defense started a little rough, giving up an early touchdown. The Mustangs struggled against the option scheme at first, but settled into their own. “We talked about what we were going to do with the option scheme, but we didn’t execute it early. We got settled in and made some big plays. The touchdown was big, and we had a goal line stand that was big. We got some stuff to work on before next week,” said Carrouth.

The Mustangs start their season Friday night at Carver. The Mustangs have two weeks to make adjustments before conference play begins. Two teams have been added to the conference, taking away two of their non-conference games.
