Mustang fall in a close game
The Mustangs hosted Southeast Alamance for a conference basketball game Friday night. The Ladies tipped off first against the 1/2A Mid Carolina 3rd ranked Southeast Alamance. Coming into the game, Southeast was ranked 13-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Mustangs came in 6-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
The Mustangs had their hands full from the beginning with the Southeast defense. Southeast went up 19-4 in the first quarter, four different players points on the board for Southeast. All four first quarter points from the Mustangs came from Junior Zeikierra Young. Senior Hannah Hunt scored two points along with Young for the Mustangs in the second quarter, but Southeast added to their lead, scoring 13, giving them the lead at the half 32-8. Five Southeast players scored a combined 19 points in the third quarter while Hunt and Freshman Temperance Harvey scored a combined four points. With a score of 53-12 going into the final quarter, the Southeast defense didn’t let up. In the fourth quarter, Ansley Preslar and Calissa Clendenin both scored a combined total of five. Ten Southeast ladies scored 61 points to North Moore’s 17.
The Mustangs fall to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Lady Mustangs will travel to Southern Pines to take on Father Capodanno Grunts on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday they will play in a conference game at Jordan Mathews. The Ladies will be back home against Bartlett Yancey next Friday.
The guy’s fell to Southeast in a tight game that came down to the end. It was a game that kept you on the edge of your seat in a loud gymnasium from the start. The Mustangs came into Friday’s game 5-10 overall and a conference record of 1-8. The Stallions came to Robbins 8-9 overall and a conference record of 4-6. Mustang Colby Pennington scored the games first points with 6 minutes to go in the first quarter. Austin Patterson, Dawson Futrell, and Gavin Deese all contributed to the Mustangs 15 points in the first quarter. Southeast Jerry Sims scored 14 of the Stallions points in the first quarter, with 12 of them being from deep range.
The Mustangs came out on top in the second quarter with Pennington, Michael Copeland, and Brady Preslar contributing to the quarter’s 13 points. The Mustang Defense half the Stallions to five points, giving the Mustangs the 28-21 lead going into halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Stallions were on top 21-16. Pennington only managed to score a single free throw in the third quarter because of the Stallion Defense.
The fourth quarter was fast passed for both teams in the beginning. Things began to slow down and the teams cold off after a score book discrepancy had refs and coaches in discussion. North Moore called a timeout with a tie game at 49 with 2:28 to go. The Mustangs send the Stallions Jerry Sims to the line where he went 1 & 1 with 29 seconds to go. Pennington took a 3-point shot and missed, Preslar grabbed the rebound and put the ball back up for 2. After the fouls, the Stallions were up 54-51 with 6.5 seconds remaining. The Mustangs brought the ball down, but the Stallions made a steal on a pass to end the game. “Last night was our most complete game of the season on both ends of the floor. We were obviously disappointed with the outcome, but I am strongly encouraged by what I saw from our guys. We have been dealing with adversity all season, injuries and a depleted roster, so I’m so proud of our team for showing a lot of toughness and continuing to play hard without making excuses,” said Coach Ginn.
The Mustangs are now 8-10 overall and 4-7 in conference play. They will play on the road Tuesday at Jordan Mathews and next Friday back at home against Bartlett Yancey.
