Mustangs defeat Grunts in tight game
At the Moore Montessori School gym, two Moore County teams took the court. The North Moore Lady Mustangs made the 28 mile trip from Robbins to take on the Father Capodanno Lady Grunts. The Mustangs went into the game 6-10 overall all and the Grunts were 9-6. Both teams came into the game off of a loss and looking for a win.
The first quarter was close with the Mustangs going with the full court press. The Mustangs struggled with ball control and the Grunts had plenty of opportunity for shots, but they wouldn’t fall. The two teams made 11 fouls. Those factors contributed to a close and low score of 10-9 in the first quarter.
Despite having five more team fouls in the second quarter, the Grunts found a way to take a seven point lead. The Grunts leading scorer Julie Attar put up 8 points, assisting her team with a 24-17 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Mustang defense came into play. The Mustangs held the Grunts from scoring until 2:50 left in the quarter. The Mustang defense holding the Grunts from scoring allowed their offense to spread out and five different shooters put their name in the score book. The two teams found themselves tied 31, all at the end of the third quarter. This game was hard fault by both defenses, neither team was afraid to hit the floor and fight for the ball.
Going into the close game, the Mustangs defense continued to work, only allowing two Grunt shooters to score. Attar put five points on the board for the Grunts, but it wasn’t enough to match the four different ladies who scored for the Mustangs. The Lady Mustangs came out on top 43-38.
For the Grunts, Julie Attar scored 20 points with four other Grunts scoring the remainder 18 points. The Mustangs had six ladies who put their name in the books with Zeikierra Young leading the team with 12 points. Ainsley Preslar scored 10 before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs improve to 7-10 and will resume conference play on Tuesday at Jordan-Matthews. The Grunts fall to 9-7 and will be on the road at Lee Christian on Tuesday.
