Southern Pines Youth Rugby Press Release

The Southern Pines Youth Rugby Club hosted the first stop on the North Carolina Youth Rugby Union’s High School Fall Sevens Circuit.

Thirty teams from across North and South Carolina traveled to Morganton Road Sport Complex for a beautiful day of rugby.

The first half of the day saw the boys’ divisions compete. Our very own Southern Lines Jokers won all three of their matches, but what was even more impressive, was that they didn’t allow a single score against them. Coach Gus Remington was quick to credit his players for putting in the work at practice which led to a great day on the field. Union Pines Junior Dylan Giltzow (a third year player) helped keep the team focused, while newcomer Pinecrest Sophomore Will Squires displayed speed and skill as he sliced up defenses all morning.

The second half of the day saw the girls’ divisions take the field. Our own Southern Pines Harlequins brought 7 new players that got their first taste of rugby. Coach Jordan Kennedy has worked hard to not only teach rugby, but to build a strong culture and the Quins showed heart today. After tying their rival, Chapel Hill, in their first match, the Quins went on to win their next three. Led by Senior Pauline Sechet, the Quins were able to put together impressive phase play and rugby IQ while newcomer Akeelah Knox put on a show with her breakaway speed.

Many visiting clubs were impressed with the venue and location. They are looking forward to many more rugby days in the Pines.

We want to send a thanks to the NCYRU for selecting us to host, the Town of Southern Pines for allowing us to use the Sports Complex, the referees for keeping the matches flowing, and a special thanks to Kiwi (no one really knows exactly what he does, but it makes rugby better).

All this would not be possible without our Volunteers and Sponsors. We cannot thank them enough.“

Sincerely,

Joe Hogan, Director and Head Coach
