Southern Pines Youth Rugby Competes in Ruggerfest

The Southern Pines Youth Rugby club took down two teams (12U Jesters HS Girls Harlequins) to compete in the 2024 Carolina Ruggerfest. Carolina Ruggerfest is an annual tournament with over 80 teams from 12+ states. The Jesters got to play teams from NC, SC, and GA and went 1-2 on the weekend.

Coach Adam Wachob was impressed with the 12Us players tenacity and team work “We were able to bring a number of players quality playing time and get our kids reps on the field to get comfortable on the pitch. Our players learned a lot - we are most impressed with their teamwork and relentless support of their teammates during- we’re so proud of our players.”. Coach Izzy Moreno noted that the players have already shown a lot of growth and is looking forward to what’s next, “These players have already shown so much, and now we get to continue to get better for the regular season.” Coach Griff added “Being part of this organization in my 3rd year of coaching, I can’t be more proud of our players, coaches and families. We elevated our game and ourselves this weekend. Our 12u team was bracketed in a level with talented, high class, long established clubs and still in the face of it played like champions, further developed in their style of play and were consummate professionals throughout. They are all young warriors, with incredible spirit and tenacity. I’m honored to coach them!”

The Harlequins played teams from GA, OH, and NC and went 2-1 recording their first ever 15s wins. Head coach Jordan Kennedy was thrilled to finally have a winning outcome “These girls have worked their tails off all season and finally were able to get in the win column. I couldn’t be more proud of them”. Not to be forgotten, we had a handful of our 14U Jesters and High School Boys join up with other teams to get some playing time with other clubs. Jokers captain, Senior Wyatt Carlson, said “This is such an awesome event and we got a chance to play with another club, learn a different style, and make more friends.”

We want to give a big shout out to our players, parents, the NCYRU, our board, and our sponsors for making this weekend a blast. Next up for SPYRC is the regular season.
